This is how many new COVID-19 strain cases there are in the US

New coronavirus case variants are popping up around the country, but how many are there in total? John Hopkins has the answer.

There are multiple strains of COVID-19 in the United States, and now Johns Hopkins University has said how many new COVID-19 strain cases have been reported in total.

One Johns Hopkins University expert said that there have nearly been 1,300 cases of new COVID-19 variants identified in the US. Gigi Gronvall, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, said that the researchers “don’t have the full picture” yet, and that experts will have a much better idea of the situation “in the next few weeks”.

Gronvall said in a Thursday virtual briefing, that “I think it’s safe to assume that there are a lot more than what has been recorded.” A good way to think of how mutation works with the virus is to consider each new infection a metaphorical dice roll.

Andy Pekosz, a Johns Hopkins virologist, said, “If it’s a one in a million chance that the virus can mutate to become better, essentially we’ve let this virus roll the dice 900,000 times because we haven’t been able to control the number of cases that are out there.”

Gronvall went on to say that researchers are now going to need to do a “much better job of doing genomic sequencing”, as “I think this is going to be a big impact of COVID on the future and how we do epidemiology.” For more information on this story, check out this link here.
